Province Unveils New Collector Vehicle Plate

MPI Develops New Insurance Rating Group for Collector Vehicles

Owners of qualifying collector vehicles will soon be able to purchase a distinctive, new collector vehicle licence plate in addition to a newly developed auto insurance package, Justice Minister Andrew Swan, minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance, announced today. Swan made the announcement during a meeting with representatives from Manitoba’s automobile associations.

“This new collector plate and vehicle insurance program option is the direct result of speaking with members of the collector car community who obviously have tremendous pride in their vehicles.” said Swan.

The new Collector Vehicle Program is designed to reflect the infrequent use of these vehicles and the extraordinary care and maintenance owners provide for them.  Insurance rates for the new Collector Vehicle Program are subject to Public Utilities Board review and, pending approval, the new collector vehicle program will take effect March 1, 2014.

“The Collector Vehicle Program premium will reflect the infrequent use on roadways,” said Marilyn McLaren, president and CEO, Manitoba Public Insurance.  “This new insurance option will provide comprehensive, year-round protection.”

Gord Forman, provincial representative of the National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada, said he’s pleased the provincial government and auto insurer have responded to the needs of owners of collector vehicles.

“This new program fits the needs of our members and collector vehicle owners across the province,” said Jim Penziwol, chair of the Manitoba Association of Automobile Clubs.  “This is a progressive and positive move forward.”

The new collector plate is a throwback to Manitoba licence plates of decades ago -vintage yellow in colour, displaying the phrase ‘Collector.’  Vehicle owners who currently have a personalized plate on their collector car will also be able to transfer their personalized plate message to the new collector plate.
