Apprenticeship Awards Recognize Industry Leaders, Journeypersons and Apprentices

The eighth annual Apprenticeship Awards of Distinction were presented last night, highlighting the dedication and commitment of employers, journeypersons and industry training leaders who have contributed to the success of apprenticeship training in helping Manitobans get good jobs, Jobs and Economy Minister Kevin Chief said today.

“When employers and industry leaders help an apprentice learn a trade, they're strengthening that person’s family, neighbourhood and community,” said Minister Chief.  “These awards recognize the many mentors in Manitoba who are making a difference by building a province where no matter who you are or where you come from, you know you can have a bright future.”

The successful award recipients were:

  • instructor of the year:  Barry Chetyrbok, Red River College;
  • journeyperson of the year – urban:  Mark Braun, hairstylist, Salon Pop;
  • journeyperson of the year – rural:  Rene Bissonnette, automotive service technician, Rosenort Motors;
  • employer of the year – urban:  McKenzie Electric Ltd.; and
  • employer of the year – rural:  Komfort Kitchen.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of apprenticeship in Manitoba, the minister noted.  He added there are more than 10,000 active apprentices in over 55 designated trades in the province and almost 30,000 journeypeople have been certified since 1944.
