Manitoba Government Announces Location of New QuickCare Clinic in Seven Oaks

Innovative Primary Care Option to Fit Health-care Needs of Seven Oaks Residents, Right Where They Live: Premier Selinger

The Manitoba government has confirmed that a new QuickCare clinic will be built in Seven Oaks, to provide better care for families and develop a sustainable health-care system as part of the plan to ensure all Manitobans who want a family doctor or a nurse practitioner have access to one by the end of the year, Premier Selinger announced today.

“This new QuickCare clinic is another important initiative that will help thousands of families in the city’s northwest corner access the health care they need when they need it,” said Premier Selinger.  “Our government is proud to add this innovative primary care option to fit the health-care needs of Seven Oaks residents, right where they live.”

QuickCare clinics are designed to meet the unexpected health-care needs of Manitobans during times when most other clinics are closed.  They are staffed by registered nurses and nurse practitioners who diagnose and treat minor health issues, helping people avoid unnecessary trips to an emergency room or having to wait for regular clinic hours.  Each QuickCare clinic, including Seven Oaks, will also be part of a My Health Team.

The five existing QuickCare Clinics in the province have seen more than 100,000 patients since opening, offering timely care for minor ailments and routine health needs such as a cold or flu, minor infections or stomach pain, the premier noted.

“With weekend and evening hours, and their community location, QuickCare clinics are convenient for families when their regular health-care provider may not be available or when a visit to the emergency room is not required,” said Health Minister Sharon Blady.  “Our government has been hard at work developing new initiatives and facilities to help Manitoba families get quality health care including launching five of 14 My Health Teams and opening the fifth QuickCare clinic in the province in January.  We will continue to build strong and co-ordinated care options for families.”

“Nurse practitioners and registered nurses are important members of the health-care team who can improve access to primary-care services for clients visiting QuickCare clinics,” said Frankie Scribe, manager, QuickCare clinics, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.  “QuickCare clinics have proven to be a very good alternative the public can use to our busy emergency departments for minor illnesses and injuries.  It all amounts to our clients receiving the right care in the right place when they need it most.”

The Manitoba government has already opened five nurse practitioner-led QuickCare clinics and three more are in development and expected to serve communities before the end of 2015, Minister Blady said.  The new clinic location announced today at 930 Jefferson Ave. in the Seven Oaks area of Winnipeg is expected to open in the fall of 2015, she added.

The premier said that while most patients using this new clinic will likely live or work in the Seven Oaks community, anyone can visit a QuickCare clinic.

Minister Blady noted these clinics do not replace regular visits with a patient’susual health-care provider.  They work jointly with local physicians and clinics, as part of a My Health Team, to build strong and co-ordinated care options for families.
