10-bed Health Centre in Notre Dame de Lourdes Now Under Construction: Premier Selinger
NOTRE DAME DE LOURDES—Construction is underway on a new 10-bed health centre next to the personal care home and the primary health care centre in Notre Dame de Lourdes, Premier Greg Selinger announced at a sod-turning ceremony in the community today.
“Building this new facility next to the personal care home will make it easier for residents to receive care at the health centre without needing to be transferred,” said Premier Selinger. “As a new, state-of-the-art centre that offers bilingual services, it will serve as a cornerstone of care for people throughout the region.”
Construction of the new, $20.8-million centre will ensure families in the area have access to bilingual emergency and urgent care services, in-patient care diagnostic services (imaging and laboratory) and out-patient services, the premier said. In addition, the new health centre’s kitchen will serve the personal care home.
"Reaching this phase of the project is a testimony to the collaborative efforts by the Manitoba government and a visionary community,” said Kathy McPhail, chief executive officer, Southern Health–Santé Sud. “This new health centre will be an important part of the health campus – a new working environment that will improve patient care, confidentiality and comfort.”
“This construction is timely as the community is growing and showing so much potential,” said Dr. Denis Fortier, vice-president, medical services, Southern Health–Santé Sud and local physician. “The new health centre will enhance recruitment and retention efforts for health providers considering a career choice in Notre Dame.”
The health centre, the only fully bilingual acute care facility southwest of Winnipeg, also partners with Ste. Anne Hospital and St. Boniface Hospital to provide bilingual education for medical students from the University of Manitoba, University of Sherbrooke and the University of Ottawa.
“The community of Notre Dame de Lourdes is thrilled that we are now moving to the construction of a new health centre that will provide quality health services in a bilingual environment for people in this region,” said René Comte, president of the sub-committee, hospital construction committee. “We have worked tirelessly in co-operation with the Manitoba government and Southern Health–Santé Sud to realize this project and the community contribution continues to be outstanding.”
The premier noted construction is expected to be complete in the spring of 2016.
