Tabor Home will Mean Better Long-term Care, Closer to Home: Minister Blady

MORDEN—Construction is underway on a new 100-bed, long-term care facility here, Health Minister Sharon Blady announced at a sod-turning ceremony in the community today.

“The new Tabor Home will provide families with quality long-term care in a modern facility, while increasing capacity for the future,” said Minister Blady.  “For families in the region, this will mean faster access to long-term care for their loved ones, closer to home.”

The minister noted the new Morden–Tabor Home represents a $38-million investment by the province and the community.  It will be locatedon the east side of Morden, adjacent to PTH 3, and will replace the existing facility that was built in 1968 and expanded in 1984.

The building will be 77,319 square feet, more than twice the size of the current facility.  This facility will offer greater flexibility than the older Tabor Home with units adaptable to various levels of care based on changing community needs, the minister said.

She explained this flexibility could mean utilizing up to 20 beds for supportive housing, allowing the facility to be responsive to the needs of seniors in the community.  The facility will also include a unit to provide care for seniors with complex needs, such as severe dementia or behavioural management issues.

Minister Blady said the new facility will feature larger single-resident bedrooms with private washrooms and a variety of spaces for dining, recreation and large gatherings.  The hallways are designed to promote walking, encourage social interaction and provide direct access to protected outside spaces.

“This new, modern facility will help meet the region’s growing need for personal care services and will enhance the working environment for staff to provide the best possible care to our deserving seniors,” said Kathy McPhail, CEO, Southern Health–Santé Sud.  “The Morden-Tabor Home sod turning event is a celebration of relationships and partnerships.  We would like to express our profound appreciation to the Province of Manitoba and the Tabor Home board of directors and staff for their leadership and commitment to the project.”

Tabor Home staff members were consulted throughout the design phases, helping to make sure this new facility meets the diverse needs of the community.

“This new state-of-the-art personal care home will be something the citizens of Morden and area can be very proud of,” said Wilf Warkentin, board chair, Tabor Home.  “It will provide care and comfort to our elderly, for many years to come.”

Construction of the new Tabor Home is expected to be completed in the spring of 2017, the minister said.
