Province Celebrates First Terry Fox Day, Encourages Manitobans to Participate in Terry Fox Run to Support Cancer Research

Manitobans are invited to celebrate the first official Terry Fox Day in the province on Monday, Aug. 3to honour the Winnipeg native and Canadian icon’s memory and legacy, Health Minister Sharon Blady said today at the unveiling of the Terry Fox Day display at the Legislative Building.

“Terry Fox, one of the greatest heroes in our nation’s history, was born here in Manitoba,” said Minister Blady.  “It is with great pride that our government saw the Terry Fox Legacy Act come into force this year on the 35th anniversary of his Marathon of Hope.  His story and accomplishments continue to inspire generations of Manitobans.”

The Terry Fox Legacy Act was approved unanimously by the Manitoba legislative assembly earlier this year.  In addition to legally establishing the first Monday in August as Terry Fox Day, the act also states the second Sunday after Labour Day in September will now be known throughout Manitoba as Terry Fox Run Day.  The minister noted this year the annual Terry Fox Run will be held on Sept. 20.

“Terry’s interactions and surroundings during his early years played a role in developing the personality and values that we hold in such high regard 35 years later,” said Rolly Fox, Terry’s father.  “We believe the Terry Fox Legacy Act, while recognizing Terry's birthplace, will also assist our collective efforts to further Terry’s dream of eradicating the suffering that cancer causes.  We are truly grateful.”

The minister added that to date, more than $700 million has been raised in Fox’s name to support cancer research.  As a result, cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment have greatly improved through the years, providing hope to cancer patients and their families.

Manitobans are encouraged to contribute to this worldwide effort this year and help raise funds for cancer research by joining the more than two million participants who take part in the Terry Fox Run in more than 25 countries.  Terry Fox runs will be held in more than 30 communities across Manitoba.
