Province Announces Appointment of Two Provincial Court Judges
The Manitoba government has appointed Julie Frederickson and Kusham Sharma as provincial court judges to serve in Winnipeg, Justice Minister Heather Stefanson announced today.
“The role of a judge with the provincial court is among the most important in Manitoba’s justice system,” said Stefanson. “I am confident these two distinguished individuals will maintain the integrity of the office and uphold the rule of law for all Manitobans.”
Frederickson received her law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1994. She then served as a junior lawyer with the private law firm Campbell Marr before joining the City of Winnipeg’s legal services department as a solicitor. In 2014, Frederickson went on to serve as assistant deputy attorney general with the Manitoba government’s civil law division, then as the deputy minister of justice and deputy attorney general from 2015 to 2017.
Sharma received her law degree from the University of Manitoba in 2002, then served as a Crown attorney with the Manitoba Prosecution Service from 2003 to 2014. She later served as a senior advisor to the deputy minister of justice and deputy attorney general of Manitoba and then as the executive director of the innovation and restorative justice branch of Manitoba Justice.
Frederickson and Sharma were selected from a list of candidates recommended by an independent judicial nominating committee, chaired by Chief Judge Margaret Wiebe. This committee also included three community representatives, representatives from the Law Society of Manitoba, the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Bar Association and a provincial court judge. The appointments are effective immediately.
An official swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled for both appointees in the near future.
