Manitobans Encouraged to Take Commuter Challenge June 3 to 9: Squires

Manitobans are encouraged to choose green transportation options for commuting to work and school during this year’s Commuter Challenge, Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires announced today.

“Green transportation options are good for the environment and, in many cases, a good workout too,” said Squires.  “I look forward to hopping on my bicycle to commute to the Legislative Building next week.”

The Commuter Challenge is an annual friendly competition that encourages Canadians to cycle, walk, run, take a bus or form a carpool during their daily commutes.  This year’s event runs from June 3 to 9.  During last year’s Commuter Challenge, Manitobans logged more than 575,000 kilometres using green or active transportation, which translated into a reduction of over 94,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide.

“Making an active lifestyle part of our daily routine sets a good example for our youth,” said Squires.  “Commuting to work or school is a great way to encourage healthy living while reducing our carbon footprint.”

Manitobans can visit www.GreenActionCentre.ca to register and log their green kilometres during Commuter Challenge Week.
