Province Supports School Capital Projects



The province continues to support school capital projects through $129.5 million in funding for school divisions across Manitoba, Education and Training Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced today.

“We continue to make significant investments on new schools as well as major additions and renovations to existing schools,” said Goertzen.  “Manitoba has more than 600 schools and this funding will help them remain safe and functional.  Growing communities will also benefit from new school facilities to meet their needs.”

Provincial funding has been provided to school divisions for many projects such as new facilities, infrastructure renewal, major additions and renovations, modular classrooms and new child-care centres.  The list includes several multi-year capital projects that are underway including:

  • six new classrooms, a new gymnasium and a free-standing child-care centre for 74 children (18,863 square feet) at La Salle School in the Seine River School Division and also includes renovating the old gymnasium to create new classrooms and a new library;
  • six new classrooms, a new gymnasium and a free-standing child-care centre for 74 children (19,392 square feet) at Ecole Dugald School in the Sunrise School Division, and also includes renovating the old gym to create a multipurpose room and resource teaching space with work expected to be completed by spring 2019;
  • kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Winkler (Garden Valley School Division) and a grades 9 to 12 school in Niverville (Hanover School Division) that are approximately halfway through construction and set to open in September 2019; and
  • two new schools in Winnipeg (Winnipeg and Seven Oaks school divisions) and one in Brandon that will be tendered by the end of the month.

Other ongoing projects that will receive funding include:

  • roof replacements in the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM) and Turtle Mountain, Seine River, Seven Oaks, Pembina Trails, Winnipeg, Western, Interlake, Hanover, St. James-Assiniboia, Park West, Brandon, Flin Flon, Portage la Prairie, Garden Valley, Louis Riel, River East Transcona and Lord Selkirk school divisions;
  • mechanical systems replacements in DSFM and Garden Valley, Winnipeg, Seven Oaks, Hanover, Park West, Louis Riel, River East Transcona, Sunrise, Turtle Mountain, St. James-Assiniboia, Brandon, Pembina Trails, and Interlake school divisions;
  • structural upgrades in DSFM and Interlake, Mystery Lake School District, Lord Selkirk, Pembina Trails, Seven Oaks, Winnipeg, St. James-Assiniboia, Southwest Horizon, Frontier, Portage la Prairie, Seine River and Turtle Mountain school divisions; and
  • accessibility projects in the Portage la Prairie, River East Transcona, Seven Oaks, Brandon, Rolling River, Winnipeg, St. James-Assiniboia, Pembina Trails, Louis Riel and Hanover school divisions, and these projects include new elevators, lifts and link additions between building wings that create universal access.
