Statement from Premier Brian Pallister Recognizing Nobel Prize Winner Dr. James Peebles

On behalf of the Manitoba government and all Manitobans, it is a privilege to congratulate Dr. James Peebles on co-receiving the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Dr. Peebles, an acclaimed theoretical cosmologist, grew up in St. Boniface and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Manitoba.  He received his PhD at Princeton University and is that institution’s Albert Einstein Professor of Science.  He is a world leader in his field, with much of his career focused on the clustering of galaxies in space, and how to extract and apply information to test theories of how these galaxies may have been formed.  Dr. Peebles holds numerous honourary doctorates and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Order of Manitoba.

As Manitobans, we know looking to the vast night sky is often a powerful experience.  Dr. Peebles has reminded us that it can also be the beginning of a journey towards knowledge, achievement and academic excellence to be shared with the world.  Budding scientists of all ages can be inspired by Dr. Peebles’ many contributions to our understanding of science, physics and cosmology.
