Manitoba's First Independent Public Library On A First Nation Opens In Peguis

Manitoba’s first independently operated public library on a First Nation opened in Peguis today, Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Minister Eric Robinson has announced.

“Public libraries provide a gathering place for young and old to learn and share knowledge,” said Robinson.  “They contribute to the economic development of a community and they promote creativity and encourage life-long learning.”

The province provided $79,000 in provincial grants in addition to the startup collection and shelving. The province will also provide approximately $27,000 in annual provincial grants to Peguis First Nation Public Library.

“Working with our community partners, the Manitoba government’s long-term objective is to ensure public library service to each and every Manitoban,” said Interlake MLA Tom Nevakshonoff, who attended the event on behalf of Robinson. “The opening of the new Peguis public library demonstrates that commitment.”

The 3,200-square-foot library is located west of the Peguis Mall on the Peguis First Nation,
170 kilometres north of Winnipeg. The province provides nearly $6 million in annual funding to public libraries across Manitoba.
