Province Invested $3.9 Million in Northern Communities Capital Projects
– – –Northern Infrastructure Strengthens Provincial Economy: Clarke
The Manitoba government has invested $3.9 million to improve infrastructure in several northern communities, Indigenous and Northern Relations Minister Eileen Clarke announced today.
“Supporting our northern communities with essential infrastructure like additional roads and water treatment plants greatly impacts and benefits the well-being of Manitobans living in these communities. These projects also have a positive effect on the strengthening and rebuilding of the provincial economy as a whole,” said Clarke. “I am pleased to have worked together and across departments to bring these capital projects to fruition; when communities are strong, Manitoba is strong.”
Thirty-three projects were completed, with the largest project being a $2.5-million waste disposal site in Waterhen. The project involved the design and construction of a regional waste disposal site that is used by multiple communities. The project has been in operation since August 2019.
The province has committed to improving northern communities’ health and safety. Investments in water and waste infrastructure help improve the quality of life for residents and future generations, noted Clarke.
Manitoba Indigenous and Northern Relations also collaborated with Manitoba Infrastructure on several of the projects.
“Our government recognizes the importance of investing in transportation infrastructure across the province,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler. “Reliable infrastructure plays a critical role to the continual movement of essential items and is vital for the long-term sustainability in Manitoba’s business and trade sectors.”
The province continues to work with northern communities and leaders to ensure that Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents have opportunities for access to infrastructure and engage in Manitoba’s economic development.
