Manitoba Government Continues to Deliver on 20 New Schools Guarantee

Two More Schools for Growing Waverley West Area and More: Cullen

The province will push ahead to meet its guarantee to build 20 new schools by budgeting approximately $60 million for the tendering of two new schools for the growing Waverley West area, Education Minister Cliff Cullen announced today.

“In our Budget 2021: Protecting Manitobans, Advancing Manitoba, we committed a $1.6-billion education funding guarantee. This guarantee will continue to advance Manitoba’s education system by accelerating the construction of our 20 New Schools Guarantee, ahead of schedule,” said Cullen. “These new schools will address growing enrolment needs in those communities and create new learning spaces for our students.”

Two new schools in Waverley West, a kindergarten to Grade 8 school for an enrolment of 800 students and a grades 9 to 12 school for an enrolment of 1,200 students, will be open to tender with the goal of starting construction in the summer of 2021. Both schools will be constructed on a single Waverley West Schools Campus, in the newly approved subdivision. Close collaboration with the City of Winnipeg has allowed for significant co-location opportunities for shared services with the future next-door City of Winnipeg South Winnipeg Recreation Campus. This will allow for a whole-of-community approach to education and recreation in the Waverley West neighbourhood.

“By providing new schools, we are making sure we’re putting Manitoba’s students first,” said Cullen. “We are making record investments into our education system in order to create the critical infrastructure for a learning environment that gives teachers, educators and front-line staff the resources to provide quality education to students.”

As of January 2021, six new schools have been built or acquired and opened including a new school for the Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine (DSFM), the minister noted. Two new schools in Waverley West will start construction this summer and the remaining 12 are expected to be designed and completed ahead of the original 10-year commitment, he added.
