A Manitoba summer tradition continues with the province’s free family fishing and provincial park access weekend happening June 12 and 13, Agriculture and Resource Development Minister Blaine Pedersen and Conservation and Climate Minister Sarah Guillemard announced today.

“This weekend, we encourage Manitobans to get out and enjoy the great outdoors and participate in recreational fishing free of charge,” said Pedersen. “This has been a tough year, and while there may still be some public health restrictions, it’s a great opportunity to spend time together with members of your household and carefully explore Manitoba’s abundant fisheries and parks.”

Summer family fishing weekends have been offered since 1992. On June 12 and 13, anglers will be able to fish without a licence provincewide, except in national parks where a federal licence is still required. Access to provincial parks will also be free starting Friday, June 11 through Sunday, June 13. Regular camping fees will still apply if visitors plan is to spend the night in one of Manitoba’s many beautiful campgrounds.

“There is no better way to enjoy a Manitoba weekend than by visiting a provincial park,” said Guillemard. “We all need to find ways to embrace nature, while at the same time remembering to follow all the latest public health guidelines.”

Anglers fishing without a licence this weekend will be allowed to keep a conservation licence limit of fish, which varies by species. All other rules and regulations will apply, as outlined in the 2021 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide. To obtain a copy of the 2021 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide, visit www.manitobafisheries.com.

Manitoba is accepting feedback on its Recreational Angling Strategy until June 30. The strategy includes a suite of proposed changes to angling regulations, which will increase opportunities to fish while enhancing protection of the province’s valuable fish populations.
