Province Celebrates Safe Hunting with Provincial Hunting Day

The Manitoba government recognizes today as Provincial Hunting Day to celebrate safe and sustainable hunting, Agriculture and Resource Development Minister Ralph Eichler announced today.

“This is a day set aside to take a moment and reflect on the importance of hunting and the balance responsible harvesting brings to our environment,” said Eichler. “Safe hunting practices have been taught year after year through Manitoba’s hunter education partnership with the Manitoba Wildlife Federation, along with the traditions of hunting that have been passed on from generation to generation.”

Hunters play an important role in protecting the environment and managing the province’s game species for all Manitobans, noted Eichler. The Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF) has been providing hunter education on behalf of Manitoba for many years and anyone wanting to buy a hunting licence is required to have hunter education training. The provincial program teaches students hunter ethics and responsibilities, hunting laws and regulations, firearm safety and other topics that promote safe and lawful hunting in Manitoba.

”The Manitoba Wildlife Federation is thrilled to continue to deliver the hunter education program in partnership with the province,” said Carly Deacon, managing director, MWF. “This ongoing education program ensures all Manitobans have access to proper firearms safety training and hunter education to become safe, ethical and responsible hunters.”

MWF held firearm training during the days leading up to Provincial Hunting Day, but under the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, the majority of its programs have been offered virtually. MWF’s free virtual seminars are open to the public and include a variety of topics including upland, waterfowl and big game hunting, as well as more specifics on scouting, wild game cooking and cleaning.
