The Manitoba government will repeal the Public Services Sustainability Act, Finance Minister Scott Fielding announced today.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has only deepened the economic burdens facing Manitoba families and businesses,” said Fielding. “Our government will continue to address these unprecedented challenges and pressures, while avoiding public sector layoffs and providing financial relief for all Manitobans. All of these shared concerns are best served by a fresh start.”
The Public Services Sustainability Act was introduced and passed in 2017 but was never in force. While the constitutionality of this never-proclaimed legislation raises important issues on the range of legislative tools open to government – as it manages the economic pressures facing all Manitobans – it is now time for a different approach, the minister noted.
The legislative session resumed yesterday with the speech from the throne that outlined the government’s new vision for a strong economic and social recovery, while focusing on the health and well-being of all Manitobans. The session will rise on Dec. 2.
