Board Provides Governance Role, Co-ordinates a Relevant, Accessible, Responsive Apprenticeship and Certification System in Manitoba: Reyes

The Manitoba government is appointing new members and reappointing others to the Apprenticeship and Certification Board, Advanced Education, Skills and Immigration Minister Jon Reyes announced today.

“The work of the Apprenticeship and Certification Board is important for the regulatory management of the skilled trades in Manitoba,” said Reyes. “Each of these board members is knowledgeable about designated trades or occupations, and the needs of Manitoba’s labour market for skilled and trained persons.”

The Apprenticeship and Certification Board is an advisory board responsible for promoting apprenticeship and certification, supporting employer and employee participation in apprenticeship and certification, advising the minister about training needs and Manitoba's labour market needs for skilled tradespeople and participating in interprovincial apprenticeship initiatives.

Board members provide the voice of industry and their insight, experience is critical to ensuring a high-quality, relevant apprenticeship system that meets Manitoba’s labour market needs, the minister said.

Reappointments to the board include:

  • Harvey Miller, chair (Winnipeg);
  • Laura Garet, vice-chair (Winnipeg); and
  • Carol Paul, employer representative (Winnipeg).

New appointees to the board include:

  • Ashley Weber, employee representative (Winnipeg);
  • Adam Morin, employee representative (Winnipeg);
  • Shawn Henry, employee representative (Winnipeg);
  • Davide Novo, employee representative (The Pas);
  • Donald Mackenzie, employer representative (Lac du Bonnet);
  • Richard Korving, employer representative (Winnipeg);
  • Darryl Harrison, employee representative (Winnipeg); and
  • Kevin Poirier, training provider (Brandon).

The department reduced the number of board positions to 12 from 15 to align with the amendments that were brought forward through the Apprenticeship and Certification Amendment Act.

The Apprenticeship and Certification Amendment Act was proclaimed on June 14, 2021, to allow for faster implementation of nationally recognized training standards to improve competitiveness, increase labour mobility of Manitoba’s tradespeople and decrease the time required to implement program upgrades.
