Province Extends Green Energy Equipment Tax Credit To Solar Thermal Systems: Rondeau
Manitobans now have access to a provincewide program that will help reduce the cost of purchasing a solar energy system, Science, Technology, Energy and Mines Minister Jim Rondeau announced today.
“We are extending the Green Energy Equipment Tax Credit to solar thermal energy systems purchased for use in Manitoba,” said Rondeau. “Solar thermal is a proven and market-ready renewable energy technology that can be used to heat air and water in residential homes and commercial and institutional buildings.”
This solar tax credit was introduced in the 2009 budget as an incentive to use renewable solar equipment in Manitoba. Purchasers who install specified solar heating equipment will qualify for a refundable 10 per cent tax credit on eligible capital costs.
This tax credit is claimed through the income tax system by filing an income tax return. It is a refundable tax credit so both tax-paying and tax-exempt people can benefit.
“The Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) is pleased with today’s announcement and looks forward to working with the Manitoba government to develop a strong, efficient solar energy industry in their province,” said Elizabeth McDonald, CanSIA president. “Solar thermal is one of the best ways for a family to reduce its annual greenhouse gas emissions. Solar energy is the future; we are pleased with this step towards building a new clean economy and creating green collar jobs.”
“Space and water heating, as well as cooling, can consume up to 40 per cent of personal energy consumption,” said Rondeau. “A solar thermal system is a step towards a clean, sustainable and secure heating supply which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Changing to solar energy can quickly add up to large energy reductions at the community level.”
The minister noted that solar thermal energy provides energy security and diversification, an environmental contribution to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and can replace significant quantities of conventional energy including natural gas.
