Manitoba Government Celebrates Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival

The Manitoba government congratulates the Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival and recognizes the unique opportunity it offers for visitors to experience traditions and activities with a special connection to northern wilderness, Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt announced today.
“I would like to thank the festival’s organizers and volunteers for hosting this year’s event and creating an environment where visitors can connect with local communities, culture and traditions,” said Nesbitt. “I would encourage all Manitobans to visit the Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival in The Pas and take part in this iconic Manitoba tradition.”
Held annually in February, the event is one of the oldest winter festivals in Manitoba and celebrates the rich culture and history of northern pioneers. The festival is also supported through the Department of Sport, Culture and Heritage’s community festival and events program.
Originating in 1916 as The Pas Dog Derby, the festival was recognized for its dog race that took place over a distance between 140 and 200 miles, crossing through northern Manitoba communities including Carrot River, Cranberry Portage and Flin Flon. Throughout the years, the festival has grown to include additional events including the World Championship Dog Race that attract mushers from around the world, snow sculpting, logger events and family activities. This year’s celebration runs from Feb. 15 to 19.
