Governments of Canada and Manitoba Announce Infrastructure Funding for Red River College
WINNIPEG, MB May 20, 2009 — On behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, Shelly Glover, Member of Parliament for St. Boniface, along with Diane McGifford, Minister of Advanced Education and Training, today announced a Knowledge Infrastructure Program investment of $10 million in Red River College.
This investment is part of the federal government’s two-year, $2-billion plan to repair and expand research and educational facilities at Canadian colleges and universities. The program is helping to provide economic stimulus and promote employment by creating jobs for engineers, architects, trades people and technicians. It is also helping to generate the advanced technological infrastructure needed to keep Canada’s colleges and universities at the forefront of scientific advancement.
“As this program targets both colleges and universities, the Knowledge Infrastructure Program will provide students with the equipment and facilities they require to be at the leading edge and will allow them to contribute positively to the workforce when they graduate, while at the same time contributing right now to the Winnipeg and Manitoba economies by creating jobs,” said MP Glover.
“By supporting the development of the historic Union Bank Tower building, we will create a world-class culinary arts and hospitality training centre where students can publicly showcase their culinary skills while have a significant impact on revitalizing Winnipeg’s city centre and expanding our role in building our knowledge and skills economy,” said Minister McGifford.
Red River College will receive a total of $20 million under the federal and provincial partnership agreement in the Knowledge Infrastructure Program.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan sets out to stimulate the Canadian economy over the next two years and to improve our long-term competitiveness through $12 billion in new infrastructure investment, which includes the $2-billion Knowledge Infrastructure Program. This new support is the next substantive investment in the Government of Canada’s multi-year Science and Technology Strategy, Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada’s Advantage.
