Manitoba Government Supports Career Exploration for Youth with Refreshed Manitoba Career Prospects Program
The Manitoba government is ensuring that students will be able to discover and develop career pathways and the skills needed for in-demand jobs in the province’s key industries as part of a refreshed Manitoba Career Prospects program, Economic Development, Investment and Trade Minister Jeff Wharton announced today.
“A skilled, adaptable and productive workforce is essential for our province to compete locally and in the global market,” said Wharton. “The Manitoba Career Prospects program is a vital resource that helps students, along with their parents and educators, to explore rewarding, enriching career opportunities in a multitude of industries throughout the province.”
The Manitoba Career Prospects program focuses on establishing meaningful connections between students, teachers, career counsellors, workforce service providers, industry organizations and sector councils to encourage youth to choose rewarding careers in Manitoba. Key program activities include participation in career events, presentations at high schools and post-secondary institutions, as well as a dedicated website and targeted social media campaigns.
The Manitoba government is awarding Creative Manitoba a four-year contract to administer and manage the refreshed program. As the new program administrator, Creative Manitoba will work to introduce students to a variety of career options within Manitoba’s leading and emerging sectors, and provide timely, relevant information on the education and experience required for specific careers so students can make informed choices on their career path.
The minister noted the Manitoba government’s $225,000 investment for 2023-24 will support program administration, stakeholder engagement, career development and marketing activities. A new website will also be launched in the spring of 2024.
“The Creative Manitoba team is excited for the opportunity to take on Manitoba Career Prospects and looks forward to engaging with key stakeholders over the coming months, including students, parents, educators, sector representatives and employers from across Manitoba’s diverse economy,” said Thom Sparling, executive director, Creative Manitoba. “Linking young people with career paths and helping to meet the workforce needs of employers is important work that is also engaging and rewarding.”
Creative Manitoba was selected as the new program administrator following a call for applications process, the minister noted, adding the refreshed Manitoba Career Prospects program is part of the Manitoba government’s ongoing work to renew the Sector Council Program, which supports organizations in key provincial sectors to support business growth and prosperity.
