Grants will Help Communities Expand Services, Enhance Infrastructure and Support Local Development in the North: Simard

The Manitoba government is providing more than $1.2 million to support 21 community development projects in northern Manitoba through the From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for All program, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.

“Our government is committed to building safe, healthy communities where individuals, children, youth and families can thrive,” said Simard. “From the Ground Up supports this commitment by funding many projects throughout northern Manitoba that will contribute to the well-being of their communities.”

The program provides grants up to $100,000 for community renewal initiatives and community spaces, and up to $50,000 for its children and youth stream. This year, the program will support 21 projects in northern Manitoba including:

  • City of Flin Flon, Phase 2 construction of the Flin Flon Aqua Centre, $100,000;
  • Boys and Girls Club of Thompson, youth centre upgrades, $100,000;
  • Manitoba Indigenous Summer Games host corporation, upgrade to the Fort Island baseball facility in Norway House in partnership with Norway House Cree Nation, $100,000;
  • Incorporated Community of Nelson House, community greenhouse construction, $56,100; and
  • Thompson Community Development Corporation, implementation of the City of Thompson Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, $44,300.

“Boys and Girls Club of Thompson is deeply grateful to the Manitoba government for their incredible support through From the Ground Up,” said Lianne Denysuik Maynard, executive director, Boys and Girls Club Thompson. “This funding allows us to make essential improvements to our building, the home of our after school program, our late-night program and our youth build program. Without this investment, these upgrades simply wouldn’t be possible. Minister Simard is doing an outstanding job supporting northern communities, and we truly appreciate his commitment to helping organizations like ours create safe, supportive spaces for children, youth, and young adults to learn, grow and thrive.”

Launched in 2024, From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for All focuses on community-led response and revitalization efforts, including capacity building, wellness and safety, economic development. social inclusion, housing co-ordination and youth initiatives.

In 2025-26, the program has committed more than $12 million to support 208 community development projects across Manitoba.
