Funding Supports Community Mobilization Mental Health Worker and Community Safety and Well-being Planning: Wiebe

The Manitoba government is investing $216,000 for a community mobilization mental health worker and additional community safety and well-being (CSWB) planning to support residents of The Pas and surrounding communities, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced today.

“Manitobans deserve safe communities, and they deserve support to help them along a path to a good life,” said Wiebe. “We recognize that public safety that addresses the root causes of crime is just as important, and communities themselves are in the best position to know what supports will provide the best outcomes for their residents. We’re happy to be able to come to the table with people in The Pas to work towards a safer, happier and healthier community.”

Community mobilization is a process where individuals, groups and organizations come together to address social issues associated with health and safety, crime prevention and community development. This grassroots, evidence-based approach is designed to prevent and reduce crime through empowerment-based interventions and co-ordinated services for at-risk individuals.

The investment provides $156,000 for the community mobilization initiative in The Pas, including $86,000 for a community mobilization mental health worker and $70,000 dedicated to program delivery and implementation supports.

An additional $60,000 will go towards added community safety and well-being planning in The Pas to support local safety priorities through the implementation of targeted programs and safety strategies in four areas, including:

  • social development,
  • prevention,
  • risk intervention, and
  • incident response.

“The community safety and well-being plan will provide strong actions to better the lives of the people in The Pas,” said Andre Murphy, mayor, The Pas. “This investment shows that the Manitoba government is listening to our concerns and finding solutions on how to keep our communities safe.”

Since 2023, the Manitoba government has committed $1.8 million for CSWB planning for communities provincewide to develop and implement programs and strategies, the minister noted.

The investment is part of the Manitoba government’s commitment to hiring 100 mental health workers under the Safer Neighbourhoods, Safer Downtowns public safety strategy.
