Housing Minister To Tour Northern Manitoba

To listen and give northerners an opportunity to share their views on housing in northern Manitoba, Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross will be visiting a number of northern communities as part of a tour today and tomorrow.

“The tour is a community-driven gathering of key stakeholders for the purpose of discussing ideas to create better housing for Manitoba’s northern communities,” said Irvin-Ross. “Safe, quality housing provides a foundation for people and families to work toward realizing their life goals.  Housing also allows Manitobans to move forward and take advantage of opportunities to participate fully in their community.”

Over the course of the two-day tour, Irvin-Ross will visit the communities of Thompson, Churchill, Cross Lake, and South Indian Lake.  Manitoba Housing owns over 1,900 public housing units in 62 communities in northern Manitoba.

While in Thompson, Irvin-Ross will tour the University College of the North campus, where
$6.5 million has been committed for 24 units of family housing.

While visiting other northern communities, Irvin-Ross will also be meeting with a number of other organizations and community leaders including economic development and municipal organizations.  During the tour, the minister will be joined by local MLAs, who will share what they have heard from northern Manitobans.

Irvin-Ross said the tour is part of the Manitoba government’s ongoing commitment to listen to the views of all Manitobans throughout the province.

HOMEWorks! is a $327-million, two-year investment plan of the provincial and federal governments, and is a part of Manitoba’s long-term housing strategy.  Under this initiative, there are eight priority areas including affordable housing options for northern Manitobans and urban Aboriginals.
