Province Advises Road Access Restored Near Swan Valley Following June Flooding
Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) is advising that significant progress has been made restoring access to provincial roads affected by June rainfall and flooding in the Parkland and Interlake regions.
Throughout June, heavy rainfall resulted in widespread flooding, road washouts and damage to provincial infrastructure. Some communities received as much as 200 millimetres of rain, leading to overland flooding, water-covered roadways and dozens of washouts.
At the height of the flooding, MTI reported more than 50 roads had been damaged, were covered by water or had experienced washouts. Travel was significantly restricted and motorists were advised to avoid affected areas.
MTI staff, consultants and contractors have been working since that time to assess damage, complete emergency repairs and restore access as quickly and safely as possible. As a result of these efforts, several provincial roads that were previously closed have now reopened.
The following roadways have reopened:
- Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 5 – 2.4 kilometre (km) west of PTH 10 at Wilson River;
- PTH 10 – 2.3 km east of PTH 83 at Tamarack Creek;
- PTH 10 – 2.4 km north of Provincial Road (PR) 271 at Pine River;
- PTH 10 – 3.3 km west of PR 366;
- PTH 20 – 9.8 km north of PR 271;
- PTH 77;
- PTH 83 – 1.6 km south of PTH 10;
- PTH 83 – 6.5 km north of PTH 57; and
- PR 366 – from PTH 5 to PR 485.
While many routes have reopened, drivers are reminded that some roads may continue to have reduced speed limits, temporary repairs, single-lane traffic or ongoing construction activities. Drivers should obey all posted signage and exercise caution when travelling through affected areas.
MTI continues to monitor road conditions and complete repairs at locations affected by flooding and washouts.
