Prestigious Sport Award To Be Presented To Cindy Klassen

One of Canada’s best athletes will receive the esteemed Lou Marsh Award in her hometown this weekend, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Eric Robinson, minister responsible for sport, announced today.

Robinson will present the award to Cindy Klassen at the Canadian/Sport Manitoba awards festival at the University of Manitoba this Saturday.

“It will be wonderful to have Cindy's family in attendance to see her accept this national award in her home province,” said Robinson.  “We are proud to see an exceptional athlete from Manitoba receive this honour as she remains an inspiration to all athletes across the country.”

The Lou Marsh Award is the property of TorStar (Toronto Star Publishing) and has been awarded annually since 1936 to Canada's outstanding athlete.  The award, named after a former Toronto Star sports editor, is decided by a panel of sports editors and broadcasters.

Past winners have included Wayne Gretzky, Mike Weir, Barbara Ann Scott, Catriona Lemay Doan, Terry Fox and Steve Nash.

In Turin, Italy, Klassen won a gold medal in the 1,500 metres, silver in the 1,000 metres and the team pursuit, and bronze in the 3,000 and 5,000 metres to become Canada's most-decorated athlete in any one Olympic Games.  Klassen was presented the Order of Manitoba in 2006.
