Province Announces Swan To Be Sworn In Today As Minister Of Competitiveness, Training And Trade

Premier Gary Doer has announced Minto MLA Andrew Swan was sworn in today at 10 a.m. as competitiveness, training and trade minister.

Swan held the position prior to becoming a candidate to replace Doer as leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party, but withdrew from the leadership campaign in September.  Labour and Immigration Minister Nancy Allan temporarily replaced Swan while he was involved in the campaign.

“Federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for internal trade will meet in Whitehorse Oct. 15 to continue the progress made by premiers at this summer’s Council of the Federation meeting,” Doer said.  “Andrew Swan is the perfect person to represent the interests of Manitobans on this important issue.”

Swan will also resume his duties as minister responsible for the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission and the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation, Doer said.

Swan was first elected as the MLA for Minto in the 2004 byelection and re-elected in 2007.

He served as the legislative assistant to the justice minister and as the legislative assistant to the minister of labour and immigration before being appointed the minister of competitiveness, training and trade in February of 2008.
