Visit to Include Tour of Manitoba-sponsored Projects

RAMALLAH, West Bank - Premier Greg Selinger said today he will tour the West Bank to gain first‑hand knowledge of development-assistance projects that Manitobans are helping to support.

The premier will also meet with Palestinian National Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and Dr. Ali Jarbawi, minister of planning and administrative development.  The premier will also participate in a roundtable discussion with local water experts.

“This visit will provide a unique opportunity to see the good work that is being done through the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) to help empower local communities around the world,” the premier said. “I think it is also important to learn about the challenges that people face, especially in ensuring sustainable water supplies.”

The premier will tour the Augusta Victoria Hospital in East Jerusalem where the Manitoba Government Matching Grant Program, administered by MCIC, provided support for a busing project to improve health-care accessibility for dialysis and cancer patients in the West Bank.

Selinger will also visit the Lutheran World Federation Vocational Training Centre at Ramallah, which provides post-secondary training to Palestinian youth. The Winnipeg-based Canadian Lutheran World Relief, a member organization of MCIC, supports both organizations.
