Province Announces Oscar Brand to Join Order of the Buffalo Hunt

Premier Greg Selinger today will induct Oscar Brand into Manitoba’s Order of the Buffalo Hunt during a ceremony at the annual Winnipeg Folk Festival in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a folk singer, songwriter, author and radio broadcaster.

“With a brilliant career spanning more than 60 years, Oscar Brand is truly a pioneer of the worldwide folk-music community,” said Selinger. “On behalf of Manitobans, I am pleased to honour Oscar while he is back in his home province to perform his world-renowned folk songs during the annual Winnipeg Folk Festival.”

Brand was born in Winnipeg and his famous song This Land of Ours is now celebrated as one of Canada’s most beloved national folk songs, the premier said.

The Order of the Buffalo Hunt was founded in 1957 to recognize the outstanding and distinctive contributions of leaders in areas such as politics, business, sports and entertainment.

Past inductees into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt include Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, NHL player Jonathan Toews, artist Leo Mol and entertainers Neil Young, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman.
