Flood Bulletin #14

The Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation Hydrologic Forecast Centre reports heavy rains over the weekend caused significant run-off in the Red, Pembina and Roseau River watersheds.  Many smaller tributaries rapidly increased to near flood stage, causing some localized flooding.

The additional run-off may slow the reduction of river levels or even cause an increase in water levels on the main stems of the Red, Pembina and Roseau rivers.

A flood watch is issued for:

• all points along the Roseau River; and
• the following Red River tributaries:  Dead Horse Creek, Rivière aux Marais, Buffalo Creek and Boyne River.

A high water advisory issued for:

• Pembina River from Windygates to the U.S. border; and
• the following Pembina River tributaries:  Badger, Snowflake and Mowbray creeks.

Rainfall in the Red River Valley reached 40 to 90 millimetres by Tuesday morning including 90 mm recorded at Manitou and 74 mm recorded at Emerson.  Some locations in the U.S. portion of the basin recorded in excess of 100 mm.

The Roseau and Pembina rivers have risen rapidly at some locations.  Localofficials monitored the rising waters overnight, however, no sandbagging or evacuations were required.  Provincial resources, including the Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization and emergency social services, continue to work with local officials as they respond to the flooding.

Flooding can affect road conditions quickly.  People are reminded to stay away from fast-running water.  Do not attempt to drive or walk through fast-moving water.  Before travelling, check road conditions by calling 511.

Assiniboine River

Flows on the Assiniboine River are cresting at Brandon today.  This second crest, resulting from a second crest on the Qu’Appelle River, will raise water levels on the river as it moves downstream to the Portage Diversion. Water levels behind the crest are expected to decline.
