Manitoba's Centreplace Pavilion Acknowledged at Prairie Wood Design Awards
– – –Marcelino Congratulates Cibinel Architects for Winning Prestigious Award
Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Flor Marcelino today congratulated Winnipeg’s Cibinel Architects for winning awards at the annual Prairie Wood Design Awards for the design and construction of Manitoba’s 2010 Winter Olympics pavilion.
“I congratulate Cibinel for winning the Municipal/Recreational Wood Design Award and the overall Jury’s Choice Award for its work in designing CentrePlace Manitoba,” said Marcelino. “As Manitobans, we can all be proud of welcoming more than 121,000 visitors to our pavilion during the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver. We are delighted that our pavilion continues to receive positive comments from many visitors.”
CentrePlace Manitoba is a 2,560-square-foot, prefabricated, sustainable building designed by Cibinel. The pavilion also won a Sustainability Star from the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympics. During the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, more than 121,000 people visited CentrePlace.
“Winning the Municipal/Recreational Wood Design Award and the overall Jury’s Choice Award is a result of working with a client that values innovation and sustainable design, and a creative team of designers who came up with the idea of using fallen elm trees that would otherwise have gone to a landfill site. The design itself is simple, illuminating the beauty of Manitoba elm,” said George Cibinel.
The pavilion featured a recyclable outer wall and reclaimed elm woodwork throughout. The design reflected Manitoba’s diversity from sculpted landforms, to lakes and rivers, to the province’s vibrant urban centres.
This past summer, CentrePlace was a featured display of the 2010 Red River Exhibition and is now permanently located on the exhibition grounds.
“Congratulations to Cibinel Architects for their well-deserved double win for the design of CentrePlace Manitoba,” said Garth Rogerson, CEO, Red River Exhibition Association. “This striking structure has attracted plenty of attention here at Red River Exhibition Park. We’re proud to have it on site, where it can be seen and admired by Manitobans and tourists alike.”
The Prairie Wood Design Awards Gala, held on Oct. 25, was an opportunity to celebrate those who exemplify the outstanding use of wood products and have shown a dedicated commitment to fostering new ideas and developing innovative solutions. The event showcased 30 projects from around the prairie provinces and northern territories, giving accolades to architects, engineers, project owners and industry professionals who have shown exceptional prominence in wood design.
