Drive Green, Save $2,000: Rondeau

Rebates Now Available To Manitobans Who Purchase A Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Manitobans who purchase an environmentally-friendly hybrid vehicle will only need to complete a simple, one-step application at the time their vehicle is registered to receive a $2,000 rebate from the province, Science, Technology, Energy and Mines Minister Jim Rondeau announced today.

Manitobans who purchase a hybrid electric vehicle in February, or who have purchased a hybrid electric vehicle since the rebate initiative was announced Nov. 15, will automatically receive a cheque in the mail.  Beginning March 1, one-step rebate applications will be included as part of the vehicle registration process at Manitoba Public Insurance broker offices.

“Hybrid electric vehicles use less fuel and produce fewer harmful emissions than conventional automobiles,” Rondeau said.  “Manitobans who choose a hybrid will realize significant savings on fuel costs for the life of their purchase and will now benefit from a $2,000 rebate to make the purchase of a hybrid more affordable.”

Manitoba residents will receive $2,000 from the provincial government on the purchase or long-term lease of any new hybrid electric vehicle. Designed as a bridge until lower-emitting vehicles become more readily available, the rebate program will continue through Nov. 15, 2008.

“Our government is committed to helping Manitobans save money while they take steps to protect the environment for future generations,” said Finance Minister Greg Selinger.  “This rebate will help more Manitoba families make an environmentally-friendly choice when purchasing a new vehicle.”

Manitoba Public Insurance will use its existing information systems to issue the rebate cheques, minimizing administration costs and allowing for a one-stop rebate application process integrated with vehicle registration.

Rondeau noted Manitoba has been widely recognized as an environmental leader.  The province has been lauded by Business Week Magazine as first among regional governments worldwide for action on climate change and was recently ranked first in a national energy efficiency report published by the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance.
