Province Invites Manitobans to Take Part in Summit to Develop Literacy and Numeracy Strategy

Manitobans are invited to participate in a three-day collaborative process to co-develop a cradle-to-careers literacy and numeracy strategy that will focus on building a stronger foundation for Manitoba's children, youth and adult learners, Education and Training Minister Ian Wishart announced today.

“We are committed to making Manitoba the most improved province in literacy and numeracy, and this work begins in the early years,” said Wishart.  “Literacy and numeracy are key foundations of learning and this strategy is for all Manitobans, to ensure they have the tools they need to succeed now and in the future.”

The Learning for Life Literacy and Numeracy Summit is taking place Jan. 9 to 11 at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg.  Participants will reflect on the current state of literacy and numeracy in Manitoba, identify gaps, and develop goals and action plans together.  The feedback from participants will be used to develop a new long-term literacy and numeracy strategy for the province.

People with diverse perspectives from across the province are invited to attend, including Indigenous, francophone and newcomer communities, and participants from urban, rural and northern regions.  The minister noted the goal is to hear from Manitobans spanning the diversity of the province including parents, elders, educators, front-line workers, volunteers, as well as people working in economic development and the business community.

“Everyone has a unique set of knowledge and experience,” said Wishart.  “Bringing diverse perspectives and voices together will help us to develop a whole picture and find new ways to take action and improve outcomes.”
