Legislation Introduced that Would Support Economic Dvelopment in Thompson

Legislation has been introduced that would see the City of Thompson and Vale work together to create an economic diversification fund for the Thompson Nickel Belt region, Innovation, Energy and Mines Minister Dave Chomiak announced today.

“Vale’s announcement late last year of the closure of the smelter and refinery in Thompson by 2015 and the elimination of 500 jobs has created a great deal of uncertainty about the future of Thompson,” Chomiak said.  “The Thompson Nickel Belt Sustainability Act will ensure that Vale and Thompson continue working together to ensure value-added jobs can be maintained in the region.”

Vale has already agreed to make payments in lieu of taxes in the amount of $6.25 million in 2011 and 2012.

The province has supported the city and other key stakeholders on initiatives to strengthen and diversify the economy of Thompson and the region, said Chomiak.

Manitoba and Vale both recognize the need to accelerate the economic diversification of Thompson with the pending closure of the smelter and refinery, said Chomiak, adding the creation of an economic diversification fund sends a clear message of support to the residents of Thompson.
