Manitoba Government and Brandon Schools Team Up to Stop Bullying

BRANDON—The provincial government is supporting a two-year bullying awareness program that will help Brandon schools and communities learn how to address and prevent bullying, harassment and violent behaviour, Premier Greg Selinger announced here today.

“We all have a role to play in preventing bullying and harassment in Manitoba schools,” said Selinger.  “By giving our kids the tools and language they need to deal with conflict in a constructive, positive way, we are creating safer schools for everyone.”

The two-year program, Beyond the Hurt, targets students in Grade 6 and up, to address why bullying and peer harassment happens and how to make it stop.  Run by the Canadian Red Cross, the program uses a public-health approach with an emphasis on building skills with students, teachers, parents and others to reduce and prevent incidents of bullying.

“The Canadian Red Cross is thrilled to receive this important funding from Neighbourhoods Alive!,” said Shawn Feely, provincial director of the Red Cross.  “It will allow us to provide programs that help create safe environments for students in Brandon.”

Partners in the program include the Brandon Youth Revolution, Brandon School Division and five participating schools (King George, École New Era, St. Augustine, Earl Oxford and Betty Gibson).

The province will provide $18,121 in funding to the program.
