Newly Opened PTH 110 Gives Motorists, Businesses Easier, Faster, Safer Eastern Route into Brandon: Ashton

Heavy Trucks Can Access Industrial Area from Trans-Canada Highway Without Using Local Streets

A major, new road on Brandon’s east side will improve safety for motorists, commercial truckers and farmers, Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton announced today.

“Building PTH 110 provides heavy trucks and other vehicles more efficient access to Brandon’s industrial area and helps keep them off local streets, which is a priority for citizens,” Ashton said.  “This is another key step in our increased commitment to Manitoba’s highways and is part of $589 million budgeted in 2012-13 for improved roads and bridges across the province.”

There was also a flood-protection system built into the project, Ashton said.  A pumping station and drainage network was designed and installed to minimize the risk of the roadway underpass having to be closed during a flood.

The work on PTH 110 last summer and fall included grading, removing the CPR detour, construction of the east and west legs of PR 457, base work and then paving.  The total estimated cost of the entire PTH 110 project, including the cost of the road work and the new underpass, is approximately $29.8 million.  The latest construction phase cost an estimated at $8.5 million, the minister said.

Even though work to install a final layer of pavement will be completed by next summer, the road is fully open now and is expected to be open at all times, except for short-term lane closures during the final paving, Ashton said.

The province has so far invested more than $2.2 billion of a $4-billion, 10-year commitment to improve roads and bridges across Manitoba, he said.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution approaching and in any construction zone for their own safety and the safety of workers.  The latest information on lane closures and road conditions is available any time toll-free at 511, at www.mb511.ca or by following the Twitter account at www.Twitter.com/MBGovRoads.
