Manitoba Core Infrastructure to See Record Investment in 2014-15: Minister Ashton

Manitoba will continue to invest in highways, roads and bridges across the province to support steady economic growth and good jobs, Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton announced today with the release of the interim 2014 construction tendering schedule.

“We will continue to improve Manitoba’s trade connection to North America’s core highway system and at the same time repair or rebuild provincial roadways,” Minister Ashton said.  “More than $3.3 billion has been invested in Manitoba’s highway infrastructure since 2007, which was the start of the government’s commitment to improve the condition of the provincial road network.  This preliminary tender schedule for new projects beginning next year will add to the several major multi-year projects that have been previously awarded and will continue in the coming year.”

Major projects recently completed include the federally cost shared CentrePort Canada Way and resurfacing a large section of PTH 9 through the Interlake.  Projects underway include the rebuilding of the overpass along the Perimeter Highway at PTH 75 and paving of the Trans-Canada Highway east of PTH 5 near Carberry.

There are a number of new, significant projects scheduled to be underway next year, the minister said.  Additional projects will be added to the advertising schedule in the coming weeks as part of the five-year plan announced in the throne speech that will see all of the new revenue from the one-cent-on-the-dollar increase in the PST devoted to building Manitoba’s core infrastructure including provincial highways and bridges, flood protection and municipal infrastructure like roads and water systems.

The tendering schedule for the 2014-15 construction season has been issued so contractors can prepare to bid on projects for the next construction season.  The document is available at www.gov.mb.ca/mit/contracts/index.  In addition, other projects related to flood repairs and the flexible response fund will be tendered next year, Minister Ashton said.
