Manitoba Government Adds New Upgrades Along Strategic Tourist Route

– – –
Road Work Will Mean Safer, Smoother Ride on PTH 9 from Winnipeg to Winnipeg Beach: Minister Ashton

A $45-million highway investment that will include concrete reconstruction, asphalt resurfacing and better road drainage will make the ride safer and smoother from Winnipeg to Winnipeg Beach on PTH 9 through Manitoba’s Interlake, Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton announced today.

“This busy Interlake highway is important to local families and businesses, tourists and commercial travellers,” Minister Ashton said.  “We know the best way to encourage growth in our rural economies is to invest in roads and bridges.  We made significant upgrades over the last five years and these new upgrades are part of our continuing commitment to improving infrastructure in Manitoba.”

The construction will cost $45 million over the next five years and is expected to create the equivalent of one year of employment for more than 500 people, the minister said.  Planned work includes:

  • paving of 13.1 kilometres from three km north of Clandeboye to PTH 17;
  • concrete reconstruction of 7.6 km from PTH 101 (north Perimeter Highway) to 1.7 km south of PTH 27;
  • concrete rehabilitation of two km near Selkirk from 0.8 km north of PTH 9A (Craig Avenue in Selkirk) to 2.8 km north of PTH 9A (Maple Drive); and
  • structure replacement at the Grassmere Drain.

The minister noted work announced today is in addition to $26 million of PTH 9 upgrades undertaken since 2007 including grading and concrete pavement, bituminous pavement, two bridge rehabilitations and intersection improvements around Manitoba Avenue in Selkirk.  The new upgrades are part of a five-year plan that will see all of the new revenue from the one-cent-on-the-dollar increase in the PST devoted to building Manitoba’s core infrastructure including roads and bridges, flood protection and municipal infrastructure like sewer and water systems.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and use caution approaching and in construction zones, for their own safety and the safety of workers.  The latest information on lane closures and road conditions is available anytime at 511 (toll-free), at www.mb511.caor by following the Twitter account at www.twitter.com/MBGovRoads.
