Louis Riel Statue and Commemorative Plaque Unveiling at Legislative Building

Manitobans are invited to attend the official unveiling of the new Louis Riel statue and the Manitoba Heritage Council's commemorative plaque as part of Manitoba Day celebrations at the Legislative Building, said Culture, Heritage and Citizenship Minister Harold Gilleshammer and Northern and Native Affairs Minister Darren Praznik.

"In 1992, the legislative assembly formally recognized Louis Riel as an individual of historic significance in our province, and the new statue and plaque pay tribute to his contributions and role in Manitoba's entry into Confederation," said Praznik. "It is fitting that this unveiling take place on Manitoba Day, the date when the Manitoba Act received Royal Assent in 1870."

The official unveiling will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Louis Riel statue was created by sculptor Miguel Joyal and commissioned by the Manitoba Metis Federation. It will be located on the south grounds of the Legislative Building facing the Assiniboine River.

Manitoba Day celebrations at the Legislative Building are from 2 p.m to 5 p.m. Activities and entertainment will feature Metis performers including the Official Metis Band, dancers and fiddlers, Highland dancers, and a variety of arts and crafts. Additional events, tours and heritage exhibits hosted by museums, heritage organizations and local communities will take place throughout the province.

"As Manitobans come together to celebrate our province's birthday, we have the opportunity to look back on our many achievements and look ahead to the tremendous potential for growth and development in the future," said Gilleshammer. "I encourage all Manitobans to join in the festivities at the many events taking place throughout the province."
