Traffic Lights "Switched-On" at Trans-Canada and PR 248

New traffic control signal lights are now operating at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Provincial Road 248 near Elie, Agriculture Minister Harry J. Enns announced today on behalf of Highways and Transportation Minister Glen Findlay.

"The signal lights were required because of a steady increase in traffic on PR 248," said Enns at the official ceremony to switch on the lights. "A large part of that increase can be attributed to a steady growth of economic development in the area."

The minister said the signals will be traffic activated, remaining green for the Trans-Canada Highway until the arrival of a vehicle on PR 248. Large 'Prepare to Stop' signs, situated east and west of the intersection, warn approaching traffic of the signal lights with flashing amber lights that turn on near the end of a green signal. Consistent with all traffic signals in rural high speed areas, the approach speed limit will be reduced to 80 km per hour.

"Manitoba's transport industry and traffic are growing daily because of the economic success Manitoba is experiencing," said Findlay. "Because of the increase in transport activity, we must constantly make improvements to ensure the safety of all Manitobans using the province's highways."

The total project cost is $110,000, which includes lights, poles and associated wiring.
