$2.92 MILLION FINAL FUNDING PAYMENT

FOR U OF M NURSING BUILDING PROJECT

The Manitoba government has provided $2.92 million to the University of Manitoba, representing the final payment in its $5.32 million commitment to a new nursing building project, announced Education and Training Minister Jim McCrae.

"It's going to be a great facility for students and staff, providing them with an expanded nursing program and improved surroundings that are safer and more conducive to learning," said McCrae. "The construction is on schedule and will be ready to serve as temporary dormitories for Pan Am athletes this summer. It will stand as a lasting legacy of the games, and indeed, of the very spirit of partnership and volunteerism of Manitobans."

In addition to the provincial contribution, the University of Manitoba is providing $8 million towards the project and the Pan Am games the remaining $1 million.

The project also includes an adjacent parking facility that will help meet the demand for additional on-campus parking. The combination of the parkade with the nursing facility has saved $1.25 million.

The new building has replaced the Bison Building, which was built in the 1940s. The original building was deteriorating, and had inadequate heating and ventilation systems as well as inadequate classroom and meeting space.

The new nursing facility will be named the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing. Dr. Helen Glass, a Manitoba nurse and professor emerita in the faculty of nursing is internationally-renowned. She is an officer of the Order of Canada, a member of the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, former president of the Canadian Nurses Association and holds honorary doctorates from five Canadian universities.
