TRAFFIC LIGHTS SWITCHED ON

FOR NEW BRANDON EASTERN ACCESS ROUTE

A new route improving access to Brandon's industrial park and reducing commercial traffic through the city is now open, Steve Ashton, minister of highways and government services, announced today.

The new 7.4 kilometre gravel roadway was built between PTH 10 south of Brandon and Richmond Avenue east of the city at a total cost of $3.5 million. The PTH 110 route provides southern access to the industrial area, eliminating the need for commercial trucking to use 18th Street and Richmond Avenue through the city.

"This project significantly enhances commercial truck access to Brandon's industrial area and will potentially reduce the volume of traffic through the city," said Ashton. "Transportation is a major Manitoba industry and we are pleased to support projects that promote growth in this sector and benefit local economies."

Traffic control signal lights have been installed on PTH 10 as part of the project. The highway is scheduled to be paved in the 2000 construction season.

Construction of the access has allowed the city to implement dangerous goods routing and restrictions on commercial transports. The eastern access relocates trucks carrying hazardous goods away from residential and business areas while encouraging economic development in Brandon's eastern industrial zone.
