APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

TO MUNICIPAL BOARD

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Jean Friesen today announced the appointment of Peter Diamant as chairperson of the Municipal Board.

"I am extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Diamant," said Friesen. "Peter brings a wide range of experience and expertise to the position. His leadership will prove invaluable as the board continues its work on important provincial issues."

Diamant, a researcher and consultant in urban planning and design, served as a Winnipeg city councillor in the early 1990s, and as deputy minister of urban affairs in the 1980s. Diamant, who holds several degrees including a masters in urban and regional planning from the London School of Economics, is also an adjunct professor at the University of Manitoba department of urban planning.

The Municipal Board comprises a chair and 26 part-time members. The board's functions include acting as an appeal tribunal with respect to property assessment and land use issues and supervising the financial matters of local governments.

Diamant replaces outgoing chair Gerry Ducharme. The province has also appointed four new members from Winnipeg: Marilyn Walder, Georgina Garrett, Jim Neil and George Corbett.
