New Provincial Advisory Board To Help Shape Churchill's Future

A new provincial advisory board has been appointed to enhance the Port of Churchill's contribution to the regional economy, Transportation and Government Services Minister Steve Ashton announced today.

The Port of Churchill Advisory Board will provide advice to the Manitoba government, develop policy strategies and support the port at both the government and industry levels.

The board members are: Lloyd Axworthy, former federal cabinet minister and Manitoba member of parliament; Edward Schreyer, former Manitoba premier; Dwain Lingenfelter, former Saskatchewan deputy premier and agriculture minister; and John Plohman, former Manitoba highways minister.

"The Port of Churchill's facilities are under-utilized," said Ashton. "This advisory board, through the collective knowledge and experience of the members, will help us address complex multi-jurisdictional issues and develop strategies that will support increased traffic through the Churchill gateway."

Among the issues to be addressed are grain movements through the port, extension of the shipping season and related ship insurance costs, port infrastructure requirements and traffic diversification opportunities.

"Churchill is a key to the economic and social development of Manitoba, northeastern Saskatchewan and the Kivalliq region of Nunavut," said Ashton. "The port has tremendous potential and I look forward to working with the board members to develop this key infrastructure resource."
