Duff Roblin To Represent Manitoba At D-Day Anniversary Celebrations In FrancePremier Gary Doer has announced that former Manitoba premier, leader of the Senate and veteran of the 1944 Normandy campaign Duff Roblin will represent Manitoba at the D-Day 60th anniversary commemorative celebrations scheduled for this weekend in France.
While Roblin is in France, he will pay a courtesy visit on Claude Laverdure, Canada's ambassador to France, before going to Putot-en-Bessin, Normandy, where he will attend a commemorative event with Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson on June 5.
Later that day at Beny-sur-Mer, Roblin will speak at the invitation of Veterans Affairs Canada on behalf of D-Day and Normandy campaign veterans. Also speaking at the event will be the governor general and the prime ministers of Canada and France.
On June 6, the actual anniversary of D-Day, Roblin will attend the global celebrations scheduled for Juno Beach and Arromanches before returning to Manitoba June 8.
"Obviously I will attend these celebrations with mixed emotions," said Roblin. "It is humbling to be asked to say a few words on behalf of the veterans—but it is a request I am honoured to fulfil."
"Mr. Roblin will be an excellent ambassador at these events for Manitoba and indeed for all Canadians," said the premier. "We are delighted that he is able to attend and to participate."
