102 Community Projects Benefit from Provincial Heritage Grants

102 Community Projects Benefit from Provincial Heritage Grants

Minister Proclaims Two New Provincial Heritage Sites

In addition to designating two Manitoba heritage sites, Culture, Heritage and Tourism (CHT) Minister Eric Robinson announced today that more than $435,000 in heritage grants and lotteries funding was shared by 102 Manitoba communities in the first six months of this year.

Through the heritage grants program, funding assistance can be provided to any non-profit, incorporated community organization or local government for up to 50 per cent of the eligible costs.  The program supports a variety of projects that communities have identified as historically significant and important to them.

“Manitobans appreciate that if they don't maintain and protect these sites, artifacts and memorabilia, they risk losing them forever and losing touch with their heritage and the historic elements of their communities,” said Robinson.

Funding is provided in the form of a cash grant from CHT, funding earned from the Manitoba Lotteries' casino bingo volunteer program or a combination of both.  During the 2003-04 fiscal year, 92 grants were approved for a total of $445,700.  At one event, a team of 10 bingo volunteers can earn $1,500, $1,800 or $3,000 for their organization.

“The program is a valuable source of funds to many non-profit organizations working on community projects,” said Scott Smith, minister responsible for the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation Act.

As well, Robinson announced today the Ralph Connor house in Winnipeg and the former Mowbray School in the R.M. of Pembina have been declared provincial heritage sites in recognition of their historical significance.

The 90-year-old former Ralph Connor House at 54 West Gate is now home to the University Women's Club of Manitoba and is an exceptional example of the Tudor Revival style which was very popular at the turn of the century.

Mowbray School, built in 1904, stands on its original site in the R.M. of Pembina and, while no longer in use, is a rare surviving example of the typical pioneer one-room school.

“These priceless assets serve as a reminder of the life and times of the people who originally settled and lived in this area and also stand as a testament to the steadfast pioneer spirit and determination that sought to provide educational opportunities for every child in Manitoba,” said Robinson.
