Residential Tenancies Act Amendments Now in Effect

Residential Tenancies Act Amendments Now in Effect

Amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act come into effect today to add clarity and increase efficiencies in its administration.

“These amendments will help us better serve landlords and tenants by streamlining the administration of the act,” said Finance Minister Greg Selinger.

The changes clarify the ability of tenants to give notice to end a tenancy if they are no longer able to live independently.  The amendments also clarify the circumstances when a landlord or tenant can give a five-day notice of termination of tenancy.  An example of that would be when health or safety is at risk.

As part of the changes, requirements for landlords to store valuable abandoned possessions are adjusted to 60 days.  Landlords are also given more authority to dispose of abandoned personal property of little or no commercial value.
