Grants For Innovation In Citizenship Education Announced By Minister Of Education, Citizenship And Youth

MORDEN—In recognition of World Teachers' Day, Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson announced here today the availability of grants of up to $1,000 to support 10 innovative projects in citizenship education.

"Our government is committed to preparing young Manitobans for the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and how to actively participate in a democratic society at school and in our communities," Bjornson said. "I strongly encourage classroom teachers, teacher teams and school administrators to submit their ideas."

Eligible projects should focus on involving students as much as possible in the proposed initiatives from planning to completion. Topics may include civic or environmental responsibility, social justice, local, national and global concerns, human rights and understanding other cultures.

The minister noted citizenship is a core concept in the new Manitoba social studies curriculum. This new grant program will recognize teachers and schools who undertake innovative projects that build knowledge and skills, and contribute to good practices in citizenship education.

"To ensure youth have a voice in provincial issues and governance, the government holds annual youth forums, established a youth advisory council and created the MB4Youth division within Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth," Bjornson said. "Students participating in citizenship activities get the chance to experience the democratic process first-hand and that type of learning is invaluable."

Public schools offering English, French and French immersion programs in early, middle and senior years schools are eligible for funding. Application forms will be mailed to schools in the near future.
