Province Provides $420,000 For School Capital Project In Morden

MORDEN—Premier Gary Doer attended the official opening of a new industrial welding technology centre here today that will serve students in the Red River Technical Vocational Area (RRTVA).

RRTVA is a consortium of school divisions and programs serving students from Western, Garden Valley, Border Land and Red River Valley school divisions and the division scholaire franco manitobaine (DSFM). The welding program will also be available to students from Prairie Spirit and Prairie Rose school divisions.

"The Manitoba government has made a commitment to promote technical-vocational education and encourage students to consider careers in these high-demand jobs," Doer said. "I'm pleased to say the province has committed just over $420,000 toward this capital project which is also supported by several southern Manitoba businesses and the community."

Technical-vocational careers include a range of employment opportunities from auto body repair and hairstyling to culinary arts, website design and welding.

Students enrolled in the Morden Collegiate industrial welding technology program will graduate with a high school technology diploma and Province of Manitoba Level One apprenticeship standing.

"Influences on our marketplace, such as technological advances that change the way we work or lead to new types of jobs, are felt strongly in technical-vocational industries and this trend will continue well into the future," Doer said. "This industrial welding technology centre will provide a site for local industry to hold upgrading and continuing education classes as well as a place for students to pursue a promising career option."
