New Legislative Assistants Announced By Premier

Premier Gary Doer today announced changes in the appointments of legislative assistants (LAs) including a new role for Radisson MLA Bidhu Jha as the premier's LA.

"Legislative assistants play a key role in supporting the government as it follows through on its commitments to Manitobans," Doer said. "Bidhu will bring great energy and an enthusiasm for public life to his new role."

The premier noted that the six LA positions allow MLAs to gain experience associated with cabinet positions and have input into government decisions while also providing support to ministers and valuable contact with citizens and communities.

The other change is the appointment of Minto MLA Andrew Swan as LA to the Ministry of Justice and the attorney general.

The following LAs will retain their current duties:

  • Doug Martindale (MLA for Burrows) – family services and housing;
  • Tom Nevakshonoff (MLA for Interlake) – agriculture, food and rural initiatives;
  • Cris Aglugub (MLA for the Maples) – labour and immigration; and
  • Kerri Irvin-Ross (MLA for Fort Garry) – culture, heritage and tourism.
